Embarressing Mum

 28 March 2022

So, Mother's Day was yesterday. It was glorious weather - the sun was out, I wore a T-shirt! This weekend I have worn a T-shirt - no jumper- for the first time in 2022. We had lunch in the garden twice and had the firepit lit in the evening. It feels like summer will be with us soon.

My son was playing rugby. He's an incredible rugby player. My husband had been asked to referee the game; He loves 'ref-ing.' Our boy says he is good at it, brilliant in fact. My daughter, fabulous cook that she is, made a chocolate mousse as a special Mothers' Day treat. It was delicious. It led me to wonder...Son does marvellous things with a rugby ball, my husband with his whistle & my daughter in the kitchen (she gets this off her Dad) - I would say they all have a gift, but what is mine? What am I actually gifted with (apart from them [at times])? Am struggling to think.

I can do housework - as long as there is loud music on and whatever gets done is done in the shortest possible time with a timer on, so I can stop; I get the laundry done for whatever sporting, schooling, or office days and business trips are in the diary; I am the main puppy-walker in the house.....still struggling....

My son ends the struggle: "You're embarressing Mum."

Following a request to find out, what I do, that causes such embarressment he comes up with:

1. I talk to his friends.

2. I smile at him when he is waiting for the bus with his friends.

3. I come to the door to say goodbye when he leaves for school/rugby/any activity that requires him leaving the house.

4. I have "odd" taste - i.e. he does not like some of the decor in the house and would prefer to live in a super modern minimalist home (dream on!). Apparently our house looks like a hotel. I wish! Laundry done, cleaning done for me, meals cooked.....

5. I have not yet got around to getting the driveway done (because I am always doing all the other stuff).

I could go on, but there you have it. I am an embarressing mum, I have not tried to be, but I have achieved this accolade effortlessly. It is a gift.
